What do the levels mean?

  • LD3 – smoke alarms in your escape routes (hall and landings). The basic level of cover.
  • LD2 (Scottish Standard) – adds a smoke alarm in the living room and a heat alarm in the kitchen, where most fires start. The legal minimum for homes in Scotland.
  • LD1 (HMO) – alarms in every room where a fire could start, including bedrooms. Required for most houses in multiple occupation.

Questions

Fire alarm questions

  • Every home in Scotland must have a smoke alarm in the living room (or the room you use most), a smoke alarm in every hallway and landing, and a heat alarm in the kitchen – all ceiling-mounted and interlinked. You also need a carbon monoxide alarm wherever there's a fuel-burning appliance, like a boiler or gas fire, or a flue.

  • Landlords and HMOs need mains-wired alarms. In your own home you can choose: wireless alarms with a sealed 10-year lithium battery are quick and tidy to fit, while mains-wired alarms cost a little less but involve running new cables. If you already have wired alarms we can simply swap them over.

  • Cooking smoke and steam would keep setting off a smoke alarm. A heat alarm reacts to the rapid rise in temperature from a real fire, without the false alarms.

  • Most homes are done in half a day or less. We test every alarm and show you how they work before we leave.

  • Yes. We fit mains-wired systems that meet the Scottish standard for rented homes and give you the paperwork for your records.
